THE EVENT

Christie's "The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale

The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale
Christie’s, London – 28 February 2024

The 22nd edition of The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale took place at Christie’s London on 28 February 2024, following the 20th/21st Century: Evening Sale. This landmark auction reaffirmed Christie’s status as the premier destination for Surrealist art, featuring exceptional works by the movement’s most influential figures.

A major highlight of the sale was Memory of a Surreal Journey, an extraordinary grouping from an important San Francisco Bay Area collection. Assembled over more than two decades, the collection brought together rare and significant works by artists exiled in Mexico, including Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington, shown alongside iconic pieces by René Magritte, Yves Tanguy, and Oscar Domínguez.

Additional highlights included Paul Delvaux’s evocative Rosine (1968), an early fumage by Wolfgang Paalen, and Homme et Femme (1927), a rare and compelling sand painting by André Masson. These were presented in the company of works by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Dorothea Tanning, and other seminal Surrealists, offering collectors and institutions a remarkable survey of the movement’s legacy.

THE ART

Force of Nature III

LORENZO QUINN

‘We humans think of ourselves as supreme beings in absolute control of our destiny and our surroundings. We live with a false sense of security, only to be awakened by Mother Nature’s fury. After having seen the ravaged coast of Thailand and the hurricane that affected the southern States, I decided to create a sculpture dedicated to Mother Nature. This would be reminiscent of the early statues made as peace offerings to the gods in the hope of quenching their anger. In essence, people are not very different today from the people who lived thousands of years ago. We still devote ourselves to symbols in order to escape our destiny.’  – Lorenzo Quinn

Isamu Noguchi

Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese American artist and designer, transformed the worlds of sculpture, furniture, and landscape with his organic, modernist style. Drawing from both Japanese tradition and Western innovation, his iconic works—like the Noguchi Table and Akari lamps—blend nature, space, and simplicity into timeless design.
